Seminar: The Making of an Archive 23/11

Welcome to the seminar The Making of an Archive Friday 23 November at 1-4 pm. The Making of an Archive, is an initiative by the artist Jacqueline Hoàng Nguyễn, that by raising marginalized voices and stories, examines the frameworks for how society writes, archives and recalls our shared history.

PROGRAM

1 PM Grafikens Hus director Nina Beckmann and curator Ulrika Flink welcomes everyone.

1.10 PM The artist Jacqueline Hoàng Nguyn presents the project The Making of an Archive. (English)

1.30 PM Sonya Aho, journalist and active in the Assyrian Association in Södertälje. Aho presents her thoughts on preserving an association’s history and the importance of documenting their work. We will see a short film that Aho produced in connection to the Assyrian Association celebration by 2017, 50 years since the first Assyrians came to Sweden. (Swedish)


Anna Dahlgren, Professor of Art History at Stockholm University

1.50 PM Anna Dahlgren, Professor of Art History at Stockholm University. Dahlgren’s research concerns, among other things, the photographic album based on a cultural-historical perspective. Her book ”Ett medium för visuell bildning: Kulturhistoriska perspektiv på fotoalbum 1850-1950” (2007-2013) analyze photo albums as media and image practice, and how these image collections create ideas about time, memory and identity. Renée Mussai, Senior Curator, Head of Curatorial, Archive & Research at Autograph ABP, London

2.35 PM Renée Mussai, Senior Curator, Head of Curatorial, Archive & Research at Autograph ABP, London – an art institution working internationally in photography and moving image, focusing on identity, representation, human rights and social justice. Mussai will talk about the project “The Missing Chapter: Black Cronicles” and “Photography Roadshows” aimed at collecting private family photographs taken by amateur photographers. (English)

3.15 PM Maryam Adjam, Ethnologist and senior lecturer at the department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology, Uppsala University. Adjam’s dissertation ”Minnesspår – Hågkomstens rum och rörelse i skuggan av flykt” explores how a memory landscape takes shape in the space between the apparent and the perceptible, the past and the present life. Memory fragments are intertwined into a collage of walks and stories, dreams and places. (English)

4-5 PM Release of Nguyns’ new book about the Canadian part of the project, conducted in collaboration with grunt gallery (Vancouver) an Gendai gallery (Torronto).

The exhibition The Making of an Archive will be shown November 13 to December 10 at the entrance to Södertälje Science Park.
